Search Reports

There are many people involved in the search for Pierre Parkinson and a lot going on everyday, searches are happening on land, water and air. The message and awareness around the city continues to be moved further. We’d like to share some of the reports and experiences received on search efforts undertaken. Saturday November 28th 2009:

  • Victoria and Esquimalt search took place with 20 volunteers, organized by the folks at Genologics
  • An estimated 400 to 600 posters were posted and/or provided to merchants and shelters etc.
  • Canvassing took place from Bay/Quadra to Burdett/Humboldt Street

  • Continued Downtown Eastside corridor canvassing and searches

Sunday November 22nd 2009:

  • Downtown Eastside search took place with 35 volunteers. 600 posters were provided – most posted and/or provided to merchants, shelters etc.
  • Canvassing took place from Cambie to Clark Street and along the water to New Brighton Park
  • Volunteers moved from Downtown Eastside, through downtown and canvassed more at Stanley Park

  • Water searches continue all the way out to Bowen
  • Canvassing in/around the Oppenheimer area

  • Canvassing in Horseshoe Bay, put up posters and asked about Pierre along Bay and Royal Streets
  • Received permission from BC Ferries to put up posters in the two main waiting lounges at the ferry terminal
  • We also posted and made inquiries at the docks where the water taxis run as well as at the park

Monday November 16th 2009:

  • Posted close to 30 posters around Commercial Street targeting high volume locations such as: The Liquor Store, The Community Centre, The Library, Britannia Notice Board, Poster Boards, Produce and Organic Stores – Santa Barbara Market, Organic Market, East End Loop, Video Stores – Black Dog, Alpha Video, Windows of closed stores, Home Hardware, Spank, various Coffee Bars, a few Restaurants (inside) Sunrise Pizza, Burger Place, Zawa
  • Information and posters distributed to Metro Vancouver Regional Parks

Sunday November 15th 2009:

  • Pacific Spirit Park search took place with ~40 volunteers
  • All trails in the park and waterfront from Spanish Banks to Trail 7
  • Volunteers looked for  Pierre, spoke with walkers and joggers and placed posters where they could
  • Four boats left RVYC and headed across into the Burrard inlet.  Searched the entire shoreline of the inlet with no new clues uncovered

Saturday November 14th 2009:

Water searches took place for:

  • Burrard Inlet Northshore and Southshore between First Narrows and Second Narrows Bridges, including piers, docks and pilings
  • Stanley Park Seawall from First Narrows  West to Siwash Rock and then Southward to Aquatic Centre
  • Northshore West Vancouver from First Narrows to Pt. Atkinson Lighthouse
  • Pt. Atkinson to Horseshoe Bay including all Passage Island and all Howe Sound Islets
  • Bowen Island South Shore and East Shore (Pt. Roger Curtis – Snug Cove)

Friday November 13th 2009:

  • Walked Main to Richards, and Powell to Pender – talked to a lot of people on the street, at drop-in centers, Salvation Army,  cafes, etc. Left flyers at all such places. A lot people said they had seen Pierre’s picture on the news or in the paper
  • Placed 3 colour posters at Jericho sailing in the main building, 2 color posters at RVYC on the docks and a color poster at Dive & Kayak Ctr on 4th. Also put some up at the UBC village
  • Tomorrow will also cover 10th Avenue shopping area (before the UBC gates). Posters will go up at the Library, the Bean, some banks and handed out to whoever will post them
  • Occam’s posted the notice on Sailing Anarchy. Going out in Richard’s boat tomorrow with Mark and Scott to help with the search
  • Requests were made to Aquabus and Granville Island Ferries (False Creek Ferries) to place posters in their facilities
  • Ross and company remain on the water as well and are heading out again tomorrow at 8AM
  • HSBC posted Pierre’s picture in all the branches
  • Continued to search the waterfront throughout Burrard Inlet, English Bay, Bowen Island and West/North Vancouver
  • Posted picture at various locations at Grouse Mountain: Red Skyride Entrance, Red Skyride ticket centre, Starbucks, Guest Services, Grouse Grind Entrance, Alpine Guest Services, Outfitters, Spirit Gallery, Outpost – Rental, Chalet and at the entrance of the Grouse Grind
  • E-mail and PDF attachment sent out system wide to the Translink Coast Mountain Bus Operators, Transit Supervisors, Security, Depot Managers and Duty Managers to be on the look out for Pierre
  • Friday’s boat search was postponed due to high winds.  Search to resume Saturday morning beginning at 08:00 to search the West van shoreline, Bowen island S & E shore, passage island shore and the Burrard inlet.

  • Poster has been forwarded to all security staff with Concord Security responsible for most shopping centres in BC, several post secondary education institutions, and some high-profile buildings/complexes throughout the province. The result should be that the employees at all these sites will be aware of the situation and will recognize Pierre if they see him
  • Provided communications to an Amateur Radio operator (HAM) who has asked the Net Controller officer of the British Columbia Network if he could read Pierre’s story over the air waves starting 12-Nov every night at 5:30 PM. Hams from all over the Province check in and will hear the story.  Hams are called on often to be on the lookout for missing people. Hams have radios in their cars and can call for help if they do see or find someone
  • Continued to search the waterfront throughout Burrard Inlet, English Bay, Bowen Island and West/North Vancouver

  • •Close to 200 volunteers of friends and family show up at Prospect Point to participate in a massive open grid search of Stanley Park
  • Volunteers on five boats and zodiac boats (which were offered by the RVYC) with 4 or 5 people on each boat acting as spotters
  • Zodiac boats headed east along the edge of Point Gray Road into False Creek as far in as the Granville/Aquatic Centre, searched the shoreline around Stanley Park as far as the gas barge, stayed on a straight line search along the commercial docks down to the sugar dock and then across to the north shore to Lynnterm wharfs.  Headed west along the north shore to around the Washington shipyards (this was the point that intercepted with another team’s search grid) and then went west to the SeaBus terminal and resumed the search.  The search ended at the Sulphur docks
  • Helicopter searching the coastline and over Lionsgate Bridge
  • Walked around the North Shore and Spanish Banks and walked along the water
  • Several two-person groups went to the downtown core after Stanley Park covering an area roughly from Broughton St. (upper northwest limit to Homer (lower southeast limit) and from Burrard Inlet to English Bay.  Distributed posters and checked community centres, cafes and libraries (in particular to look on all floors of the main library)
  • Shelters were visited: Beacon, Union Gospel, Salvation Army and the one on East 1st. The shelter on Howe St. was closed.

Tuesday, November 10th 2009

  • Friends continue to search for Pierre and distribute posters at Denman Street, a 10-block epicenter from Hastings to Thurlow area (i.e. hitting Urban Fare and convenience stores, etc ), Vancouver Community College, Tinseltow, Carnegie Centre, Victoria Square, and Sun Yat Sen Park
  • Searched 30 retail stores in the Westend/Denman corridor, including: Community Center, Library, Safeway, all Starbucks, nearly every coffee other shop, Dominos, convenience stores, and nearly all walk-in clinics.
  • Searched the area between Main, Pender, Hastings, Carrall and Granville
  • Searched around Malkin Bowl, Brockton Point and from the Splash Park into he area between the Aquarium and the Train
  • Searched east of the bridge to Beaver Lake and looked under the bridge on the Seawall and then east of the causeway towards the city
  • Called Hospitals and downtown shelters and 2 Catholic Missions
  • Mass e-mail sent out asking volunteers to come to Prospect Point on Wednesday at 9 am to participate in an open grid search of the park
  • Placed posters on bulletin board and/or given personally: Mall Security for Capilano, Park Royal, Pacific Centre, North Van RCMP, West Vancouver Police, Bridge Management Staff, 5 Hotels on North Van Side by Bridge
  • Friends took a Royal Van boat over to West Van and search the shorelines from the fisheries research center through to Caulfield cove
  • Searched the Vancouver Aquarium. Members use electronic passes so each visit gets logged into their computer system. Pierre’s most recent visit was at the Renfrew location on November 5th
  • Walked the seawall and searched all the washroom’s from Burrard Bridge, and around the park up to the Convention Centre
  • Provided the owner of MAC Sailing with the official release notice of Pierre’s disappearance and he will be e-mailing the information to the sailing community
  • Details sent the Salvation Army’s Missing Person’s program which will also be communicated to their shelters.

Monday, November 9th 2009

  • •Friends and Family start searching for Pierre in Stanley Park, Vancouver Aquarium, and Kits Yacht Club
  • Pierre’s picture circulated to relevant departments in Stanley Park
  • Park Rangers have searched the trails and wooded areas near Prospect Point and will continue to assist as much as possible
  • Harbour Air and Salt Spring Harbour air informed of situation
  • Contacted cab companies to see if received calls from Pierre
  • Checked for recent activity on Credit card and debit cards
  • The police searched the following, by horseback police officers, the coast guard, their own boat, police dogs, entire seawall from third beach to main beach (information booth) and Washroom, trails, parking in and around Prospect Point, Prospect point buildings, trails to Lions Gate Bridge Marley’s trail from Prospect Point to third beach, sidewash, hollow trail to third beach, tatlow trail to third beach, tea house restaurant, second beach building, Tissues Lees trail, Bridal trail, North Bound adjacent area, English Bay & bathhouses
  • Posters left with the West Vancouver Police and North Vancouver Police. Officers would be shown the pictures before their shift
  • Verified that Pierre had not checked into any of the five hotels on the North side of the Bridge.  Posters provided to the two gas stations, Earl’s, Denny’s, and Subway
  • Searched and called some hotels in West End
  • Helicopter search of the waters and the area around Prospect cliff and low-level search of the harbour and waters

    Hi Paula, i work for Eric in Montreal..he was and still is rather distraught over this…he has told us ( his team )about this terrible ordeal. I am simply writing to you to say, that my thoughts are with you and your entire family…i hope the pot of gold awaits for you at the end of the rainbow…Paolo

    Sorry, no info to share. Paula, I used to work with you at Grouse Mountain and just saw this on CBC website today (we live in Ontario now) Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and your boys and I hope you find a happy ending.
